My Favorite Things About Fall

Fall is truly my favorite time of the year. I love fall because the air is crisp and clear. The colors of the leaves are so brilliant this time of the year! I love driving down country dirt roads and just enjoying God's canvas of color. Our leaves here in Maine are turning more and more every day. I'm thankful to live across the street from a large open field in which they grow hay each season. The backdrop of the trees changing colors was just breath taking!

I snapped this picture last night after having rain all weekend from hurricane Kyle. There was a fine mist rising from the ground. There was no sunset because of all the clouds, but it still was a beautiful sight! That same night, I was blessed by three deer grazing in the field.

Here's some of my favorite things I love about fall:

*The colors of the turning leaves
*Fresh Macintosh apples and cider from Thompson's Apple Orchard
*pumpkins, mums, hay bales and corn stalks
*the smell of candles burning in my kitchen
*making hearty soups and stews
*snuggling under my warm blankets at night
*walking through the woods
*the sound of leaves crunching under my feet
*bouquet's of sunflowers in a mason jar on my dining room table
*decorating for fall

I hope you all enjoy the fall season. Leave me a comment and tell me what your favorite things about fall are. Hugs & Blessings, ~ Birgit

Giveaway

Terri over at Thistle House Primitives is giving away the cutest pumpkin mat. She's an incredible crafter!! Be sure to visit her and enter your name.

Trash to Treasure

My dear hubby works in construction and has been working on remodel of a home that's over 100 years old. The old house had seen a few renovations already, but he's brought home a few treasures here and there of things that were left behind that others consider "trash". Well, you know the old saying, "one man's trash is another man's treasure". That sure holds true for me because I'm always on the lookout for things that someone else has thrown out. When I am driving through small towns, my eyes are always on the side of the road looking for old cast off's that no one wants anymore.

My hubby brought home this old gray door one day. The paint is peeling and chipped and the door is cracked and definitely not worthy of keeping out the elements anymore. He came home and said, I've got a surprise for you. He took me down and showed me this beautiful door that was going to otherwise end up in the dumpster. It was as though he had brought me a box of my favorite Recee's Chocolate bars and a diamond ring! This is what gets me excited!

I'm not very good at placing things right away. I usually let them sit in the basement until I'm ready to put them somewhere. Then, it may not be the right place, so I'll have my dh move it again. I'm so thankful that he's patient with me.

So, this past weekend we were working outside. He was cutting a few trees in the yard while I cleaned out our flower beds to let them rest for the winter. I got to thinking that it's time for me to decorate our front porch. I had hubby bring up the old door from the basement and lean it up against the house on our front porch
.

I'm not sure if that's where it's going to stay, but for now it works.

The sign above this bench isn't old, but it's one of the things that I bought on our girls day out last week and I promised I'd add a picture of it. I know I've seen this same sign on someone else's blog and I just love the deep, rich colors.

My dh also brought home these glass cabinet doors. They're not very old but I do like them. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of what I'm going to do with them. I've thought of possibly hanging one horizontally and adding hooks to the bottom (which is the side the knob is on), adding matted black and white photo's in the small panes and I don't know what to do with the large pane. I would love if you'd leave me some ideas in the comments section.

Tell me what you think I should do.

I just found this heater the other day in my travels. It was sitting by a dumpster on the side of the road. The plate on the front reads "Perfection Smokeless Oil Heater". Again, I don't know how old it is, but I love the style of it. It's quite rusty, as you can see, but I was thinking of sanding it down with a little steel wool and maybe spray painting it.

That's all my finds for today. I'd love to hear your comments and ideas. I know there's some creative gals out there! Thanks for stopping by and visiting me. Until another day~ Hugs~ Birgit

Primitive Girls Day Out Part 3
and a Rockin' Award

I've really been enjoying this new blog, although sometimes I feel a bit slow at it. It seems to take me at least a couple of hours to accomplish just one post and then visiting and leaving comments for the new friends I've made. I'm not complaining, mind you, I just hope I get a little better at it. LOL!

I have to say that I was so excited to recieve my very first award from Tammy at Country Girl At Home. She is just as sweet as can be and I'm so glad that The Lord brought her into my life. She's introduced me to a wonderful group of gals at the CS forum and to the joy of blogging. She is one of my first inspirations. Thanks Tammy, for the fun award! You ROCK too!

Moving on to the third part of Betty's and my primitive girls day out. The next stop on our list was the Blue Door Primitive Peddler located in Alfred, Maine.

This Amish buggy was just waiting in the door yard as we drove in. We're a long way from Pennsylvania and I've never seen a real Amish buggy before. Someday I hope to go there!

This barn is HUGE and very overwhelming when you walk in. I don't think there's a spot left to set anything, it was so full of crafty goods!

I wanted to buy this old cart, but it wasn't for sale.

We didn't stay here too long, partly because it was so huge, we could have spent the rest of the day there and also because our main goal was the shop in Shapleigh.

It also was very dimly lit inside so it was really hard to look at stuff.

The porch had more eye candy...

I really like how this bench was made out of a twin bed. We have an old wooden double bed head and foot board in our basement just waiting for this metamorphis to occur.

You can find Blue Door Primitive Peddler located at 27 Waterboro Rd./ Rt. 202 in Alfred, Me. Their hours of blessing are Wednesday - Saturday 10am - 4pm and Sunday 10am - 3pm.

Next on our list of stops was Country Treasures in Shapleigh, Me. She has three buildings on her property all dedicated to her shop.

This is one of the smaller buildings, but inside is cute, cute stuff! There's my friend Betty on a bee-line to the outhouse. Hi Betty! (she's gonna love me for that one!)

this is the adorable little garden shed. I can always find something cute to put in my garden in there!

I couldn't resist taking a picture of these cute little triplet Annie's just waiting for someone to come along and take their picture.

After the few pictures I took around the yard and inside the garden shed, I was informed that I was not allowed to take pictures. Again, for fear that I was stealing ideas. What a sad place this world is becoming. Anyway, this is where the pictures end for The Country Collection, located at 633 Shapleigh Circle Rd in Shapleigh, Maine.

On we went to our final stop of the day The Country Collection located in Limington, Maine. On the way, we stopped at an apple orchard and picked up some fresh from the tree MacIntosh apples and some little pumpkins and gourds for decorating.

Aren't these the cutest window boxes you've ever seen?

The Country Collection is situated right in part of the apple orchard. I guess it's all the same family. I had never been to this shop either, so this was quite a treat for me!

They had many really nice old cupboards and Hoosier's and lots of other antique crocks and such mixed in with their offerings.

I want this pair of ladies high button shoes. Aren't they awesome?

I thought these little guys were cute too!

The grounds were done up perfectly and the gardens all reminded me of English Tea Gardens. In perfect order and very clean and groomed.

This is an original outhouse. The MASTER BATHROOM of outhouses!

Look at all the space in this outhouse. You could have a small gathering in here! The green shutters to the right are where the potty is.

<

This is the little garden between the outhouse and the garden shed.

I really like this cabinet and it would go perfectly in my home! (hint.. hint...)

I like this little childs high chair too.

And there our visit to the Country Collection ends. You can find this shop on Rt. 11 at 230 Sokokis Avenue in Limington, Maine.

We had such a nice day out shopping together. A prim girls day just doesn't get any better than this!
Here's a couple pictures of my gatherings from the day. I didn't get a lot because hubby and I are pinching pennies for the winter months ahead.

I'm sure I'll be moving my new treasures from place to place until I find the perfect spot for them. Here's a couple of pictures of them placed for now.

The brown crock is a reproduction but I really like the warmth it brings to the fireplace mantel in our living room.

There is also a fall pumpkin sign that I picked up but I'll post that soon, as it's on our porch which we decorated on Sunday. I'll be sharing more pictures in a day or so.
Thanks so much for joining Betty and I on our primitive girls day out. I hope you enjoyed the pictures and if you come to Maine, I hope you'll look up some of these great shops. I also hope that maybe you'll look me up too! I love to meet up with prim friends! Hugs & Blessings, ~ Birgit

Primitive Girls Day Out Part 2
and Being Tagged

So off Betty and I go to the next stop on our list, Primitives In Pine, located in Hollis, Maine. Debi and her husband, Jamie, have refurbished an old Fedreal style home. Each room is absolutely breath taking and makes you feel like you are right back in the olden days. She opens it up once a year, for her holiday open house and puts on the most incredible feast of food you'll ever have at an open house.

Anyway, the inside of her shop is separated into lots of different rooms that are plum full of beautiful colonial and primitive style pieces.

They also design and make her own furniture and you can find their items in many shops across the country. Their work is incredible!

Debi was a little hesitant at first to let me take pictures because she's got some very new designs that they are currently making and she doesn't want her secret to get out. I assured her that the pictures were strictly for my personal blog to share with women of similar interests and in no way was I trying to steal one of her designs. Besides, I don't even know how to use power tools! She showed me the items that I could not take pictures of and I respected her wishes.

I love the paint color and stenciling on the walls in this room!

Again, Betty knows Debi, as she's been coming here for years too. So, what did they do? They talked and talked and talked while I went around each room carefully making my selections for the day. By the way, many of you are asking me what I bought. I'm going to show you at the end!

Oh, how I would love to have this bed in my room!

This cupboard was my favorite in the store. I'm glad it wasn't one of the pieces I couldn't photograph because I've got this on my Christmas list and I had to show my hubby!

Like this!

I wouldn't mind having a set of these in my home either.

So that ends our time at Primitives In Pine. You can find this store at 237 River Rd. in Hollis, Maine. Their hours of blessing are Wednesday - Saturday 10am to 4pm and on Sundays from 12pm to 4pm.

Linda, from Behind My Red Door tagged me so I have to list six random things about myself and then tag six others. Goodness, I think I just know of six bloggers! I'm still new here! Anyway, here are six random things about myself:
*I am the youngest of three girls and my mom is from Germany. I was the only one who got a German name. What's up with that?

*My husband and I started dating when I was 15 years old and we've been married for 19 years this October.

*I don't eat German food but the rest of my family loves it, while my favorite food is chocolate, peanut butter and chocolate and peanut butter. Did I mention that I like chocolate and peanut butter?

*I spend over an hour each day in prayer and reading God's word. It's the first thing I do in the morning after everyone is gone.

*I would rather go prim or antique shopping than to buy new clothes or jewelry.

*I'm enjoying blogging much more than I ever thought I would. Let's see where I'm at two months down the road. I'm not a quitter... I'm not a quitter... I'm not a quitter

So, the six gals that I tag are going to be:

Michelle from Peterson Creek Primitives

Tammy from Country Girl at Home

Karen from My Colonial Home

Char from The Pickled Pepper Patch

Okay, I don't know six gals that haven't been tagged yet. I'll have to let it stop there for now and hope that I get to know more primitive blogging friends. Hope I don't mess up something big here.
I hope you all have a wonderful and restful Sunday tomorrow. See you back on Monday for more about our day trip and other happenings. Thanks for stopping by! Hugs~ Birgit
